Welcome to December! You’ve probably pulled out your wooly socks and made sure your warmest puffer coat still fits, right? But how about the furnace? Have you had a look at that recently? Actually, you don’t necessarily have to take a physical look at it, but you should give it some thought. Then while you’re at it, why not schedule a preventive maintenance check for your workplace heating system?
Why Is Preventive Maintenance So Important?
Preventive maintenance is purposed to keep your Commercial HVAC system running with no surprise breakdowns, maintaining occupant comfort, while operating efficiently. When’s the last time you saw your Commercial HVAC system? Uhm… so it’s easy to forget about it and neglect it. Imagine you did the same with your vehicle.
Your Commercial HVAC system is the same way. No matter how expensive the system is or what the manufacturer promises, a complicated piece of mechanical equipment is subject to breakdowns and needs repairs every so often. Reduce the incidence of repairs by keeping on top of annual maintenance.
How to Get the Most Out of Your HVAC This Winter
There are plenty of simple ways to make sure you’re not wasting energy in the workplace during heating season. It goes beyond telling the office staff they really should be wearing their coats and boots in the office if they feel chilly. Actually, you could get around doing that with a few other simple steps.
1. Get a Furnace Checkup
This one is the first (and easiest) one to complete. Simply call SyncQuip and ask for a preventive check on your commercial heating system. One of our service techs will deliver a complete diagnostic check on your commercial HVAC and let you know if any action is needed to prevent a breakdown on the coldest day.
2. Check for Major Air Leaks
Take a walk around on a chilly morning. Do you feel any distinct drafts? Be cautious of doors especially. The weather-stripping tends to undergo a lot of wear and tear on main doorways. Replace any that are torn or shrunken. Grab a caulking gun and patch up any caulk that’s missing or in poor condition around windows. Cover any drafty windows with a heavy clear plastic (for ideas, check out Amazon’s selection here).
3. Adjust the Temperature
Set your temperature to the low end of comfortable. Then, to save a little more energy, set it about 10 degrees lower during unoccupied hours (night time). There is beauty in the programmable thermostats here. For nights and weekends, you can actually save a fair amount of energy by setting the temperature around 58-60 degrees. Just make sure the thermostat is set to come back up to temperature about an hour before the arrival of all staff on Monday!
4. Use Space Heaters Where Needed
There are always going to be places which seem too chilly. And yes, one of those is where the office staff sit. Naturally, sitting doesn’t create as much energy or warmth as a physical job does. So if practical, make sure that area is on a separate thermostat (let us know if it’s not, we’ll be glad to help!). Then offer space heaters to those who tend to always be cold. Radiant panel heaters are a lifesaver for office employees! They are perfect under a desk, keeping the occupant’s feet warm and thus reducing the need for a higher air temperature! Just be sure these get turned off before leaving the office on nights and weekends.
5. Keep a Finger on the Pulse
Lastly, make sure you don’t forget your furnace for the rest of the winter. Having a Preventive Maintenance Plan helps to tick all the boxes and keep your Commercial HVAC equipment in its best condition. The results may not be obviously noticeable…like the heat just keeps pumping and there are no major breakdowns. However, let me assure you that this is far better than the alternative!
